The Financial Times reports;

Nestlé is challenging the global drugs industry with plans to invest 500m Swiss Francs (0m) over the next decade to support the creation of a standalone health science business to tackle obesity and chronic disease.
The Swiss food group, which announced the move on Monday, appointed Luis Cantarell, one of its most experienced executives, to “pioneer a new industry between food and pharma” that will develop products to combat diabetes, heart problems and Alzheimer’s.

Yvonne Bishop-Weston Nutritionist , London said today “This comes as no surprise to me, it was long overdue and only a matter of time before someone like Nestle spotted a new awareness about the link between nutrition, food, mood and optimal health and started taking on the Pharmaceutical Industry.”

“The acid test will be whether Nestle actually come up with a nutritionists dream, some genuinely healthy nutritious products or just more highly processed, nutrient depleted, refined food with an added functional food nutritional ingredient” warned the nutritionist.

Treatment Of Rosacea With Intense Pulsed Light

Rosacea is a common skin condition but the treatments currently available are not satisfactory. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of intense pulsed light (IPL) for treatment of stage I rosacea (flushing, erythema and telangiectasia). METHODS: Thirty-four patients were treated, 25 women and nine men, mean age 47 years. The treatment employed was IPL 515-1200 nm, with a 560 nm cut-off filter. The fluence range was 24-32 J cm(-2). Four treatments were administered on the face at 3-week intervals. Erythema values were measured at baseline and at the end of the treatment period on the cheeks and chin. Digital photographs were assessed by a consultant dermatologist on a 10-point visual analogue scale (VAS). Patients' assessments were also made using a 10-point VAS. Outcome measures were repeated 6 months after treatment. Periorbital dermatitis is common and frequently recalcitrant to treatment . Due to the exposed and visible location, patients often suffer severely from periorbital dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency and causes of periorbital dermatitis including contact sensitizers. METHODS: We investigated two cohorts of patients (Erlangen and IVDK without Erlangen) between 1999 and 2004. RESULTS: The differences between the two cohorts with periorbital dermatitis [Department of Dermatology at University Hospital Erlangen (n = 88) and the German Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) collective (n = 2035)] were determined by the MOAHLFA (male, occupational dermatosis, atopic eczema, hand dermatitis, leg dermatitis, facial dermatitis, age > or = 40 years) index.
